Gamblers Anonymous Saved My Life But It Didn't Solve Everything

While the core principles and guidelines of the Gamblers Anonymous (GA) program remain consistent across groups, variations exist at the individual meeting level. This session will present observations drawn from attendance at multiple GA groups, highlighting practices that have been effective as well as aspects that may be challenging or lacking. It will explore the premise that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to treating gambling disorders, emphasizing the importance for professionals to consider a range of programs, treatments, and resources—including Gamblers Anonymous—to best meet the unique needs of each individual. The session aims to clarify these differences and examine related considerations for clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify key features of Gamblers Anonymous, distinguish among its various meeting types, and compare the GA model to other recovery programs and treatment approaches for gambling-related disorders.
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses that may exist in recovery programs or treatments and assess the potential of a recovery program or treatment for different populations.
