Culture, Conversations, and Connection: Engaging Communities of Color Through an African-Centered Lens

Communities of color continue to experience disproportionate impacts from gambling-related harm, yet often remain underrepresented in prevention, treatment, and recovery spaces due to cultural mistrust, stigma, and systemic barriers. This workshop centers an African-centered lens—rooted in cultural identity, collective wellbeing, ancestral wisdom, and community connection—to explore more effective and culturally congruent strategies for engagement. Grounded in principles such as Ubuntu (community care), Ujima (collective responsibility), Sankofa (learning from the past), and Nia (purpose), this session highlights how African-centered frameworks can inform prevention messaging, clinical practice, financial wellness integration, and outreach approaches.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify key African-centered principles that support culturally responsive gambling prevention and treatment.
  • Apply culturally informed strategies to build trust and strengthen engagement.
