NCAA Gambling Rules: Legal, Integrity, and Student Welfare Risks

Although the NCAA withdrew its proposal to allow student-athletes and staff to wager on professional sports, significant risks remain. The attempted change created confusion, exposed inconsistent state laws, and reflected a more permissive attitude toward sports betting. At the same time, cases involving student-athletes continue to rise due to mobile betting access, social pressure, and prop-bet growth. Drawing on experience representing student-athletes and advising institutions, this session examines the legal, regulatory, and integrity challenges that persist despite the reversal—and offers practical strategies for colleges to protect students, mitigate harm, and navigate an evolving enforcement landscape.

Learning Objectives

  • Clarify the post-reversal NCAA gambling landscape and its legal, integrity, and welfare risks for student-athletes and institutions.
