Screening For and Treating Problem Gambling with Comorbid Conditions

Despite the availability of treatment in most states, few individuals with problem gambling present for gambling treatment. This is due to a variety of factors, including stigma, lack of awareness and the glamorization of gambling. Arresting the progression of problems will require that clients first be identified in comorbid settings and then motivated to address their gambling problems along with other conditions, including substance misuse, suicidality, depression, trauma and anxiety. This presentation will educate on how to identify gambling problems and sequence treatment within a session-by-session framework with other conditions using case vignettes and dyad work.

Learning Objectives

  • To learn how to identify and motivate gambling clients who present in non-gambling treatment settings
  • To develop a session-by-session “road map” to treat all conditions in sequence.
