Language is powerful. In the realms of substance use, mental health, gambling, and other areas of care, the words we choose can either empower or alienate. For those experiencing problems with gambling, stigmatizing language often fuels shame, prevents engagement in services, and creates barriers. Unfortunately, non-clinical and harmful terms persist across prevention, education, treatment, and recovery efforts that affects the quality of care and creates barriers to seek help. As part of a growing emphasis on patient-centered and inclusive care, attendees will learn how to adopt new language that fosters dignity, reduces shame, and promotes a safe environment for recovery.
